UC Davis and other agricultural extension programs have found that gophers habituate quickly to ultrasonic devices — activity may decrease briefly when stakes are first installed, then return to normal within days or weeks.

Castor oil products show similar results: minor, temporary reduction in activity with no lasting effect. Gophers have extremely poor vision and rely primarily on smell and touch to navigate their tunnel systems. Repellents targeting smell or sound are working against an animal whose primary sensory world is underground.
